DO NOT join!!!!
I joined and intentionally got myself kicked out (in 1998). They lied to me (what was I thinking?) about my job. I was going in to supposedly do something with photography, mental health or mortuary sciences. I had a degree in Psych already when I joined and work exp in a prison and drug and alcohol rehab and stressed I didn't want a dumb secretarial desk job...i wanted a job with action. So, the day we got our jobs, I found I was going to be a secretary...I immediately changed my sexual orientation that day...and made sure the TI was aware of my sudden epiphany...
There's a bit more to my experience..message me if you're interested in the rest...

To be a member of the U.S. armed forces, no matter what the Job, is to help defend this country. Our fighting women and men need material support and good food. I don't know what your age is at this time but If our military age people were to answer "not" to that question we would still be under British rule or worse yet saluting a swastika. During the past ten or so years our country has taken a lot of abuse from terrorist here and around the world, Sept. eleventh had to be the last straw. No other country has won wars and has rebuilt nations like the U.S. has. Today Japan and Germany have very good economies and living conditions because of what the U.S. has done, and it didn't happen overnight. It happened because of a great military.
There is always some bad atrocities in all events, but those can be traced to individualist for whatever reasons and are dealt with. You probably have a better chance of survival in the military then attending a cooking school in New York city. Good Luck, whatever your choice.

As a former Marine I am convinced that it was a good decision that I joined. The life lessons I learned, discipline... etc. If you are concerned that you will be fighting a war with your pots and pans and are afraid of taking enenmy fire (highly unlikely as a cook, but still probable) then don't join. Also if cooking is your true passion then don't join! You will be doing mostly cafeteria cooking think lunch room at high school. But If that is what you want then go for it. Otherwise pick a more marketable skill, like avionics (electrician) or something worth $ in the job market.

Do what you want to do...but it is a long commitment and they don't have to keep you in culinary arts, they can send you to a war zone. So just ask lost and lots of questions of any recruiters you talk to and weigh all your options. Good Luck!
(many of my friends joined various military positions after high school-they have all been to war at least once (some twice) so just really think about it before you commit so much of your life there...you have other options)

Now im a manager at an airport and that i merely seperated from the usaf 2 months in the past. merely be particular you comprehend what your entering into beforehand you signal in, its a recruiters pastime to misinform you and get you to signal also** ask about a available signing bonus... upwards of 12k walk out in the journey that they dont provide it to you because they are all finished of **** although you make certain reliable success and stay secure.

If you're afraid of war, why would you join the military, whose sole purpose is to fight and win wars?
