Their family values include self discipline so lacking in today's average American child. Please remember that while it may be generally true, it is also a stereotype and it is unfair to categorize all Asian people this way or al American people this way.

I agree with the third person. Success is important for them as part of their culture. Some might consider it honorable. I personally agree with that, since being smart, studious and successful is the best quality to have. It takes work to be smart, let me tell you that. You need to nurture your brain, and you can't just be smart!

It's because they place education as a high priority AND because to do poorly would reflect poorly on the family, not only the individual. Also, focusing on your job is important. For a student, the "job" is studying.

speaking from an Asian point of view... some of us are not really that smart... but we try to work really hard to make ourselves look smart... also, we'd get our butt kicked really hard if we don't...

Because they go to school for 10 hours a day. They study all night. They never think of themselves as a failure and they never put social stuff before their homework.

Because there is so much competition for getting into college, everyone has to do their very best. And when they come to other countries they're comparatively smarter and more disciplined.
