Can someone explain the appeal of Soccer and the World Cup to me?

In my efforts to become more internationally harmonious (I am American) I have tried to get into to the world's biggest sport but flat out don't see how it is so popular.

forget it man. soccer? whats wrong with you? the worlds greatest sport should be american footbal. It involves kicking, running, catching, throwing. Its the ultimate sport. Its like a combination of all the other crappy sports. Forget about the World Cup. Every one else will too in a month or so.

When you watch a game, notice that the clock on TV doesn't stop. Because of this, when 45 minutes elapse, there may not have been 45 minutes of actual soccer action. The referee on the field keeps track of this and adds on time at the end to make up for time lost due to goals, injuries, or substitutions. That is stoppage time. The reason that they don't just have the clock stop is so the players play hard right until the final whistle, since they don't know for sure when that whistle will come.

Because it is the only sport in the world that Americans have never been great at. Well hey everyone has to suck at something, for us it is soccer.

i dont kno usually soccer seems boring to me but i have been watching the world cup games and they are actaully interesting..turn in for the game tommarow maybe u'll kno wat i mean.....ITaly is so gonna lose though u cann tell cuz i mean they tied up with our team and i have no idea how they made it this far when they cant even beat US in soccer.....but u kno every one likes different things.....u cant make ur self like soccer.....different things appeal to different people..
