Yes you can---but it is not advisable for several reasons---one is that sediment and impurities in the envoirnment can get into your tank easily corrupting your tank and fuel line----it is an open invite for anyone with a mind to do so (or lack of one) to put stuff into your tank that can be extremely harmful to your engine----and also (with gas prices being what they are ) it is an open invite for those with a tube to steal you blind---the first trip in they will make the cost of a replacement (found at any auto parts store) seem a trivial expense in the least----hope this helps------

Gas Tank Cap

No, there is no problem driving without a gas cap for awhile, it won't blow! Check this out: I used to have this 1981 GMC 1/2 ton short bed that I used for deliveries for my business. As I started out my day the engine on my truck started to sputter then it would stall out and die. After a few times pulling over and priming the carb., the fuel pump quit pumping altogether and I was down for the count. Here's what I did ( swear to God!) I got a 21/2 gal. red plastic gas can, put a couple of gallons in it, tied the container to the windshield wiper post with some lite string, cracked the hood and routed a 1/4"x 4' piece of clear tubing from the gas can to the bottom of the carb..I fired it up and it ran like a top, I didn't replace the fuel pump until 2 days later. The cops never batted an eye as I cruised along with this red gas can attached to the hood with this tube coming out of it, it worked great!

I assume it is OK, but at the same time you hve to think the cap is there for a reason. I figure dirt or dust could make it's way into the tank even thought there is still the little door there. And don't be surprised if the check engine light comes on in your travels. A missing or loose gas cap tricks the computer into thinking there is an emissions problem. In order for the whole fuel/emissions system to function properly, you need a sealed fuel system. Without a cap you are sucking in more air than you should be.

While your car won't necessarily blow up, newer cars with the OBDII (Onboard Diagnostics, generation 2) computers will actually cause your check engine light to come even if your gas cap isn't tightened down all the way, much less missing.

Go to your local auto parts store and buy a gas cap. They can usually be gotten for around $5-10. If you're nice they'll even put it on for you.

Yes you can drive it and no you won't blow up. Your car my loose the pressure it needs in the gas tank though. Go buy a cap they're like $3.

on 96 and newer it will set the check engine light
Gas will evaporate and

i was reading others answer it reminded me of when we had a fuel pump go out we were 20 miles from town we filled the windshield washer resivor with gas and put the hose down the vent on the card when the cat started to sputter we hit the wash button and filled the carb up we went 35 miles like this without a fire and no lid on the wash resivor
don't roll your car as it will spill all over gas is too expensive to waste last i checked it was almost $18 a gallon or at least it seamed like it

Generally speaking, most cars are not supposed to be driven without a 'gas cap.'
BUT, most cars will not 'blow up' even if you try to make them.
(I think you watch too much TV)

Some cars will not run correctly as they need the cap on tight in order to build a vacuum.
