There are 3 types of E-9 in the Army (Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major, and Sergeant Major of the Army) The patch has 3 chevrons over 3 rockers with a Star on the inside. The star has branches on either side of the star. If you want to see a picture go to http://cgi.ebay.com/Silver-Dog-Tag-Enamel-ARMY-COMMAND-SERGEANT-MAJOR_W0QQitemZ320004712975QQihZ011QQcategoryZ66529QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It looks like any other Sergeant Major's insignia of rank: three chevrons atop three rockers, with a star in the middle surrounded by a wreath.

You mean the Sergeant Major of the Army? He doesn't wear a unit patch.
If you're looking for rank insignia, go here:

I would try looking at the patches at:
http://www.soldiercity.com/search-exec/nodecode/true/search_term/sgtmaj/affiliate_id/1202/keyword/sergeant+major/campaign/insignia
This page specifically has patches for sergeant majors.
