That is correct. Prayer is the simplest form of magick.
It does not need to be complicated, it can be as simple as any wish or prayer but in more advanced forms it can involve a great deal of words, tools and preparation.
Like anything, practice makes better. The more you practice magick the better you will become. It is a very personal practice, however and what you put into it is what you will get out of it. Most only have things go wrong if they did not put the effort into it they should have, did not believe it would work or if they had the wrong purpose in mind. (harm to any other should never be a goal)
If you wish to self teach, there are many wonderful books on the subject or you could pray for a teacher to be sent your way. Either way, it is best to start simple and add more as you grow in your abilities. This is how I learned. I have been practicing for over 10 years now and I continue to learn and grow in my abilities every day. Good luck to you!

First I suggest preparing yourself spiritually. Practice the mediation of loving kindness. Meditation has some relation to magick so this exercise is doubly relevant. Visualize someone you feel indifferent to, someone you love, someone you have problems with, and finally yourself as happy, healthy, and enlightened. Imagine everyone in a pure white light, maybe with the wind blowing in their hair. Picture everyone with smiles on their glowing faces, the corner of there eyes turned up. Remember to push these people into a nexus of light holding their image for a second, then letting it go. This seals the meditation. If you can do this meditation while truly feeling love for all people then you will be ready to practice Magick. When the student is ready the master will appear.

Do you know there is no one who has been able to actually prove that magic exists? So far it's all been illusion.
