Or do you give the reason?

Does the employer need to know?

No, they are not entitled to that information. Some employers require a note from doctor, but the note does not have to state what problem you have. It just need to say he recommend rest, or something to the effect of not being able to work for x number of days.

However, if you want to volunteer that information and I usually do personally, there is nothing wrong with it. It's just that they cannot demand that out of you.

Thank God my employer doesn't ask or require a reason. I work in a hospital as a nurse and believe you me, it is sometimes necessary to take an extra day off to get the stress out.

if you really are sick and can describe it in a non-gross way, it will make your boss more understanding and sympathetic.
If you are not really sick,
Just say, "I'm really sorry, I'm so sick." and get off the phone!
But you are not obligated to say anything.
Saying that you need to take a sick day is completely appropriate.

Where I call in sick, you get a recording, but we are required to state why we are calling off and give the date you expect to return.

No. You don't have to explain yourself. If you can't go in you just can't. The reason is irrelavant, all it does is give them something to snicker at. Whether you have some personal business to tend to or you're bent over the toilet is none of their business.

I give them a reason..but just a kind of vague one. I don't go into details or anything like that. I don't know if they need to know..I just think it's proper to let them know.

Yes... if you want an excused absence.
I just tell'em i forgot to wake up...
Or I though it was Saturday....
Otherwise would cost you unemployment and other benefits and consequences
