If you know the couple personally and know what they'd like, buy them a gift from the store. If not, cash is always the best bet. Or even a giftcard to a restaurant, movies or a favorite store of theirs.

Always give a gift. You always forget how much money people give you, but even years later, you always remember who gave you a gift. A gift should be something special...money is rather cold and meaningless. One more hint, it seems to be in great fashion now to give picture frames. I can assure you that most couples are receiving so many picture frames these days, that they will never be able to use them all in their lifetime! If you must give a frame for a gift, pick something neutral that can accomodate many types of photos over the years. You can only have so many frames in your house with wedding bells and cutesy poems on them.

Give a nice little gift and give some money because the couple might need some kind of support to start off, and the gift would probably make them happy.

I think it depend on the couple. If the couple have been together long time and has owned a home almost as long,I buy a gift.If they are just buying a house and fixing it up,I give cash or gift certificate to a home depot or linen store, anything to help with their new home.

Definetely cash. The couple can always purchase the things they need off of the registry if they want to. The cash comes in handy at a time when many vendors have just been paid off and the honeymoon is about to begin, and the bank account is at its lowest.

A gift to open is nice but also the new couple would appreciate cash in a nice card as well. Try giving a small nic-nac of a bride and groom with your card. It's the thought and they'll always have it to look at.

If you have a close relationship to the bride or groom, get them an actual item to open. If you don't know them that well, go with the cash. Cash is always welcomed by newlyweds, however, if you're good friends they may cherish something sentimentel.

...off the registry? Definately get them something off the registry. That picked out those things, because they just don't want just anything.

If they are planning on going off somewhere to their honeymoon, than that's a different story.

FYI: you should spend at least $50 on the gift!

Gift, it is much more personal, unless you know they are really struggling, then cash is more appropriate.
