well always get products that are specific for dry/damged hair because their less harsher than normal products.
the reason why your hair is dry because you cuticles layer(hair protector) has wholes in it letting moisture leak out. imagine an old sponge and a new sponge, one can soak up water and the old one could barely. the old one is like our dry hair. you cant ever fully restore it but it can be restored by 80%. if you want to straighten your hair without drying it out then get leave in conditioner and put in your hair before straightening so it acts like a cuticle layer. your hair is dry and needs lots of water so don't be afraid of water.
i use garnier fructis leave in conditioner as a moisturizer and use suave humectress for my hair. my hair isn't restored fully back but it's getting there.

I've heard fructis is very good. Its going to take time, because basically it will have to grow back out. Trim it often (every 4-6 weeks), do NOT dry it, curl it, perm it, etc. Use gentle styling products if they're necessary, and don't over wash your hair. Treat it as gently as possible.

I *highly* recommend a product called Anti-Snap by Redken. It is a miracle product that can restore life to any hair. Redken also has a lot of other super products you may be interested in. The CAT treatments are also great.

Aveda (www.aveda.com) I use their products at mysalon and there is also a hair product called "Hair Mayo that will also help.Use as lillte heat as possible in your hair and start taking multivitimans and keep stress to a minimum. Also avoid overprocessing your hair with chems like color etc, your hair is ina very fragile state.

the flat iron wouldnt have done that to your hair, diet or a health problem is generally to blame for thin dry hair. However when you use a flat iron make sure it is 100% ceramic and that you are using something that protects your hair like chi's iron guard

---you should have deep conditioning treatments or hair masks every now and then to repair heat styling damage
---also, when straightening your hair, you should always apply a heat protectant to prevent the extreme temperatures of the applicances from destroying your hair
---hope this all helps and good luck!!
