16 mos isn't too young to start, but may be too young to expect any results. Pediatricians say there are two things not to get into battles over and one is feedings and two is potty training. And negative responses is a sure-fire way to ensure failure in potty training. They say you should sit them on the toilet and if they do something, great; if they don't do something; great; if they just sit there and are comfortable, praise them anyway even if they don't do anything; if they don't want to sit on the toilet, just (happily) say "ok" and suggest trying next time, but there should never be any negative or mean responses and shouldn't be punishments for not doing their business. I think 18 mos. - 2 yrs is a great time to get them use to the toilet, and then 2 yrs. to 3 yrs. to get them to start to master it. Kids can have accidents up until 5 yrs or 6 yrs so it is a long time to get the whole bathroom thing down. Their bodies just aren't use to holding it or knowing they should get to the bathroom right away.
Good Luck.

It really depends on if it's a girl or boy. Girls tend to start earlier than boys. Some countries start their children potty training before a year old. Us americans feel that about 2 - 3 is a good age, but it really depends on the child. A coworkers son is about to turn 4 and he's refusing to go in the big potty.

Between 2 and 21/2 yrs old is they best time to start. Make sure that your child understands what going to poty means before you even attempt to start. Also something I did with my children was poty training is put a long t-shirt on them and take of all training pants so that getting to the poty chair won't be such a chore, until they get the concept of what they are suppose to do then it's not to late due to the time it takes to remove clothes.

I have three children and I started potty training at the age of two.
My son gave me the impression that he didn't want to wear diapers anymore by taking them off every time I put them on him.

A little too early......some kids will let you know if they want to move beyond the diapers, but usually, about 2 1/2 to 3 years old

If your child is showing some interest, I'd say go for it. If not, you could have trouble if you start too early, and you might want to wait a few months.
