Jesus as described in the bible. What do you think about him? I'm not asking what you think about Christians, but what do you think about the man Jesus as portrayed in the gospels?

I'm not an atheist (since that means a non-theist, and I think the whole debate is meaningless) but I AM a Secular Humanist. There's so much in the bible about Jesus that was put there by scribes and followers with an agenda. But the core seems to describe someone who nowadays would be considered a far left liberal. I can't imagine someone who believes in Turning the Other Cheek would view the confrontational, attack and conquer, methods of Conservatives with anything but disgust. Same with someone who didn't mind breaking bread with the destitute...can you imagine what he'd think of people like Jerry Falwell?

In general, I'd guess he'd be embarrassed by 90% of today's Christians, and really wouldn't care one bit about what religion a person is, as long as they were trying to make things better for others.

He existed. But whether he was actually the man that Christians believe he was is subject to debate.

The church has repeatedly revisted the interpretation of the gospels of the new testiment and reworked them over the past two thousand years. Essentially rewriting them to fit agreed upon common beliefs. This process has left out gospels that did not fit their views and interpretation.

The gospels were also written many years after his death, so the accounts may not be consistent with actual events. Oral retelling of stories may have shaped accounts before they were written down.

We can all assume he may have been a great guy. Did he have a wife and kids? Depends on the gospel you read. Depends on what your church insists you are supposed to believe.

If he was anything like the scripture in reality, then he was truely a great motivational speaker with a tremendous message of peace for humanity.

Ironically, atheists believe in humanity rather than religion.

I don't believe in GOD. Jesus was a MAN. That's it. Just a person. I'm not putting him down because I'm sure he was a good person and tried to help people, but being THE son of a GOD is false. I feel people followed him because he had charisma. It's no different then people today following celebreties or whom ever the next cult person is. Keep in mind that the bible is stories written by men. They had no XBOXes, DVD's, computers, TV's, Cable, so they made up stories for entertainment.

A lot of atheists think that there may have been an itinerant preacher named Jesus (Yeshua), who wandered around in the vicinity of Jerusalem for a while, pissed off the authorities, and was crucified. However, modern biblical scholarship has created a compelling case for the idea that Jesus never existed at all, and that Christianity was just one of many 'salvation cults' that were active at that time, and justgot very, very lucky.

As an atheist, I think Jesus was a great prophet. He was a little touched in the head (believing he was the son of god) but he was the first liberal and we could all learn a lot from the man.

jesus, if he indeed was one person and not a composite sketch, was a wise person
many of the stories about him are exaggerated, perhaps sometimes intentionally to "prove" that he was "the messiah"
(i.e. it says here he will be born of a virgin, well then, jesus was born of a virgin)

he was as much the son of god as you or I

contrary to taking power away from jesus, i feel this means that we have much more potential for good than we would allow ourselves otherwise

i wish all self proclaimed christians would truly follow his example these days

i think Jesus as . written in bible, is human words to describe a person whom was a educated Rabbi/teacher of wisdom . the Jesus in the bible we do not know .. Truth .. only what the writers think. i think everyone who seeks will find this man in all life understanding if one will reach beyond the words of limit ., it was written when you seek you will find ,, but .to find is to seek and few do seek, most follow the faith they allow to lead them,, Jesus follow i believe no one .. in human form , he allowed his spirit to lead,,, that confused many , yet brought many into the same light he walked.

I suspect if he existed at all he was a lot like David Koresh or Benny Hinn. Simply another of a long list of fraudulent preachers.

Jesus was the one and only son of a make-believe god.
