Being an atheist, I find this piece interesting and quite a conversational piece.

I pose two questions for you...

This is a very controversial piece of art. This is a giant photo of a plastic crucifix inside a beaker full of the artist's urine...

The image itself is beautiful, like sunlight surrounding the object...

Here is the URL to view the image:

My questions for you:

1. What are your feelings about this piece?

2. If you are a person of faith, does the urine befoul the cross, or does the cross sanctify the urine?

I find the piece fascinating. We tend to forget that the cross is not something beautiful - it was a torture device, and when the victim died, he expelled waste. Jesus would have defecated and urinated as he died. This work of art reminds us that crucifixion was not noble, that Christ was humiliated before he died.

I don't necessarily like it (I doubt Serrano created it for it to be "liked"), but I agree that it's quite a conversation piece. It's a shame more Christians can't discuss it without condemning it outright.

I don't think one element befouls or sanctifies the other. It's art, it's raising good questions and provoking discussion, and I celebrate that.

I agree with Buddy...

I also think this was a great question, trying to provoke a few people to open their minds and give an opinion about art... Try actually THINKING before answering some stupid one word answer...

As for me, I'm not Religious, so the whole 'cross in piss' thing doesn't bother me from that point of view...it is a little gross though..>:)

I believe the artist was trying to express something, and whether we get it or not, it is an interesting piece...

Pure garbage from a person devoid of any talent. It was purely a publicity stunt designed to infuriate people by antagonizing their religeous beliefs. The urine does nothing to the Cross and no, the cross does not sanctify the piss or the crap referred to as art.

I don't see it as beautiful but respect the artists freedom of expression even when the sole purpose of his work was not to create art, but to offend and shock.

As to your second question I can't see how it would do either except in the mind of the observer.
