Cain and Abel were two brothers, sons of Adam and Eve, who came into conflict. Abel offered God the best of flock, but Cain only offered some average part of his produce (he was a farmer). Cain was angry and depressed because God was not pleased so he killed his brother Abel and then tried to hide the fact from God.

Cain represents carnal man and Able represents spiritual man (righteous man by faith).
God did not appreciate the offering from Cain (fruit of the ground - meaning effort from the flesh, nothing from the flesh can please God), but God pleased with offering from Able (by faith).
Romans 8:
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Hebrews 11:
By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.
