Children who are 5-8 years are not likely to have many (if any) memories of the 9/11 attacks, and as far as I know networks haven't been showing the footage on a regular basis. (I can't remember the last time I saw footage of the attacks on any news channel or cable channel.) I was afraid to fly when I was young and that was long before the 9/11 attacks.
I'm not saying that no children fear planes because of footage they've seen of the attacks, I just think it's more likely that the fear stems from the normal fear of falling and heights that a lot of children have.

My son started flying by himself when he was 5-1/2. He was terrified at first, but now he's just bored. Even after 9/11 ... and he was old enough to understand everything that went on (he was 9). I think it has more to do with insecurity and unfamiliar surroundings than anything else.
I mean look at it this way: are British kids afraid to ride buses? Or Japanese kids afraid to use the train? Probably not any more so than any other kid.

Yes ,my child is afraid of flying. She is 9 years old and she told me it's because of a singer whom has pass away due to flying on a plane. She was younger when the 9-11 happened and she
was not watching TV, she was to busy thinking about going to preschool. For some other children Yes it could be the case.
they may or may not grow out of it. We just have to respect there
wishes.

My girls were afraid their first time and it was definitely due to post 9/11. They kept asking if any bad guys would be on the plane. Every noise they heard, they'd ask, "What was that?!" They were 8 years old when 9/11 happened and they were 10 the first time they flew.

My nieces are 11 & 13, they are both afraid of flying since 9-11. How could they not be when our family lost 2 friends that day and were very closely impacted by that tragedy? :(

It is probably more the fear of the unknown. Also, when parents are edgy, the kids pick up on this. Even though some kids have flown when they were little, they may not remember this. This can cause a flight to feel like the first time.

I've never heard of anyone being afraid of flying. Tell your child that flying on airplanes is safer than it has ever been in the history of flight. Insure them that they are safe.
