When man and woman 'join together' they become 'one'. The relationship of the Holy Trinity is reflected in the relationship between Man Woman and God. When husband and wife have sex, they are one with each other and with God. Kinda sounds wacky God being close to us during sex... but when the Bible says 'Keep the marriage bed Holy, (set apart, special) it adds a Literal meaning to it when you consider this!

There are a couple different things that the Catholic Church teaches about the sexual act.

Through sex, a husband and wife are giving themselves fully to each other. They should already love each other, since they are married, so in this act they are giving themselves, mind, heart, body, everything they are to their spouse. This is in a small way similar to the way we ought to relate to God as well as to the way God relates to Himself - we should give ourselves completely to God, and God is One within himself, Father, Son, and Spirit.

Also through sex, man and woman are allowed to participate in a tiny way in God's creation. God created the whole universe and all people; we are given the opportunity to perform the act through which a child, with the help of God, is created. We are in a small way allowed to help bring life into the world along with God who created all life.

Those things said, sex should not be used as a means through which to reach God. It is something sacred between a man and his wife, and though by the act they participate in God's unity and creation, that is not the sole end for which the act should be the means. Praying, fasting, even acts of charity at times, those things are the means through which we become close to God. Sex is a means by which we show our love for our spouse and become closer to him or her. Done in the intent for which it was created it does also bring us closer to God, but that should never be the sole intent - a person who decides to have sex not because of his love for his wife )or her husband) but because he wants to be closer to God will fail at becoming closer simply because the act was not performed in the way that God intended.

As a Catholic myself, I've never heard of that(you're connecting with God when you are having sex)before.

All I understand about sex, from Catholic teaching, is that it is for pro-creation.

i'm not exactly sure if by having sex you come closer to God. Sex was made for a married couple to come closer, and God made sex so... i wouldn't base your knowledge on the davinci code because there are so many false statements in the book... (it's fiction)
