I think there are a lot of possible reasons. The machoismo quality can be attractive to some girls. Also, it may be because of low self-esteem and they think they don't deserve anyone better. Or it could simply be a matter of not knowing what they really want/need in a man. Speaking from experience, the jerk cycle does eventually end!

Because they are looking for people who their peers will approve of rather than someone that they know they approve of. It's the basic fact that most women (and men for that matter) are looking to impress their friends and themselves rather than find someone that they feel comfortable with at all times ... physically and mentally.
People in their 20's usually have a hard time balancing physical and mental aspects of a "date" and eventually realize that they've been on the wrong track. A soulmate or long-term partner is not necessarily someone who is perfect but someone who you feel perfect with.

It is not just women in their 20's it is all women, women just have to take their time and find the one for them.
