Laziness!!! I eat fast food almost every day but I work a very physical job outdoors and work out 4 times a week. I have less that 5% body fat (not sure about my arteries though). I was a very active child. I spent every day outside swimming, hiking, and playing some sport. If I made good grades and acted correctly by my Father's standards I was permitted to play video games on the weekend for a limited time (Odyssey 2000 and Atari...GO OLD SCHOOL!) These days kids sit inside and play video games. I'm not saying that is wrong, I am a video game addict too, but you have to balance your life. Work, play, exercise. If you eat healthy and sit all day your butt will get flat and wobbly! If you eat what you want and work out your but will be round and firm.

I am a 33 year old female. The majority, why am I lying? All of my family is over weight or has been over weight and is now dead. They all over eat, don't exercise, and in my opinion are just living to die. I am aware that life is the number one cause of death, but come on! I am not just going to sit around and wait for it. I go out and live my life to the fullest.

Parents shape children's lives and give them guide lines and rules to live by. T.V. also shapes children's lives and gives them guide lines to live by. If a parent doesn't care and lets their kids sit in front of the T.V. all day the kids see promos telling them to go out and be active as well as to eat properly. I can't put blame on parents 100%, nor T.V. 100%. I put the responsibility on the individual, no matter the age, 100%.

Our prosperity is our downfall. The traditional american value (for centuries now) has been to make a good life for yourself by making money. Well, at the turn of the last century, this turned into the modern corporation - a multi-headed dragon of greed. In order to make more money, food manufacturers (be it restaurants, snack food companies, whatever) turned to unhealthy, cheap alternatives. On top of that, waves of advertising that have been flooding our brains since the advent of television now turned to promoting these products. We began to believe that the corporations were giving us things we needed, not just desired.

They were wrong. But nobody stopped them.

Today we're living in a country that would rather eat things out of a box than out of a garden, out of a restaurant than in their home, and would rather not know what they were eating. On top of that, our busy lifestyles and time spent doing things indoors (usually sitting on a computer, eh?) have caused our unhealthy lifestyles to become more prominent. The government, which has long been supporters of the monster that put on our pounds, is finally starting to wake up - but the process is slow. By the time they realize what's going on, America will be drowning in its own bulk.

Because some people are too lazy to go in the playing area at McDonalds after they've had a Big Mac. =) Or they dont exercise at all or eat healthy or have low self-esteem. =)

people are not cooking at home very much anymore. it's not just fast food, it's restraunt food; does any one know what is in the meal they just ordered? also, soda pop is a huge one for weight gain. and then there is just the fact that people have gotton lazy. sitting in the car, sitting at work sitting at home. why stand up and cook a good dinner when you could sit on your butt and order out?

Two reasons. One, fast food/convient food- some of those quick and easy microwave foods aren't great. Two more ways to do things without getting up and getting exercise to do it, in another words technology.

Because parents don't have the courage to tell their children "No" when they ask for McDonalds food. It is easy to blame it on the fast food industry, but the real culprits are the parents and people who eat there. Do you have to eat there? NO.

Fast food, people don't check the labels when they buy food, and lack of education as to what they should be eating. They don't get enough exercise.

More calories consumed than expended. Myriad causes; poor shopping habits, portion distortion, too many high-sugar foods and drinks (try water!), lack of physical exercise, TV, video games, too much stress, too little sex, binge drinking, lousy-tasting fruits and vegetables, not enough whole grains, too much meat and starch, and on and on . . .
