This is not all that happens, but the liver dies =cirrhosis, and toxins are not released from the body, so they collect in the abdomen. The person, man or woman, would eventually get such a huge belly that they appear 9 months pregnant. Then the body slowly dies from malnutrition, dehydration, etc. I hear it is pretty awful.
Before all that, the liver would get enlarged and can be palpated by a doctor. Please get them help immediately.

One of the main signs is that ppl actually turn yellow - Whites of the eyes etc.. This is caused by severe liver damage that results from Alcoholism. Someone needs to be treated ASAP for ANY liver damage - wether it's from Hep A, B, C or Alcoholism.

If a person is coughing up or vomiting blood, this may be a sign of cirrhosis...according to the Institute of Longevity, this blood is cause by Variceal bleeding:
"Variceal bleeding is caused by portal hypertension, which is an increase in the pressure within the portal vein. This increase in pressure is caused by a blockage of blood flow through the liver as a result of cirrhosis. Increased pressure in the portal vein causes branches of portal vein to enlarge (varices), such as those in the esophagus and stomach, to bypass the blockage. These varices become fragile and can bleed easily, causing severe hemorrhaging and result in fluid buildup in the abdomen." (http://www.newliver.info/cirrhosis.html)

My father died of cirrhosis at age 42. He showed the first signs of end-stage liver damage at age 40. He would have passed much sooner if it was not for an emergency liver-bypass--a surgical procedure which bypassed his liver and caused all blood to flow to his kidneys. The kidneys are of course, not designed to filter so much blood and so many toxins so he fell into a state of confusion and eventual kidney failure.
