I have seen the statue in DC. The famous picture taken by Joe Rosenthal actually captured the second flag-raising event of the day. Captain Dave E. Severance, commander of Easy Company, ordered an American flag raised at the summit to signal to others that it had fallen. The first flag raised was too small to be seen. Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima is an iconic photograph taken on February 23, 1945 by Joe Rosenthal. It depicts five United States Marines and one U.S. Navy corpsman raising the Flag of the United States atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. 3 of the men did not survive the battle; Franklin Sousley USMC, Harlon Block USMC, and Michael Strank USMC; and 3 of the men survived the battle; John Bradley USN, Rene Gagnon USMC, and Ira Hayes USMC.

It was five Marinesand one Navy Corpsman. Read the book "Flags of our Fathers" by James Bradley (Bantam Books 2000) it tells the individual stories fo the Marines and Sailor who raised that Flag.
