I read a statistic in Time magazine that 30,000 lighters are confiscated every day in airports, and I'm wondering what percentage of total travelers this represents.

In December 2004, the FAA published a "Plan for the Future" which states that "649 million passengers flew lat year" (which could be either 2003 or 2004). Either way, with 365 days in a year, that averages out to 1,778,082 passengers every day.
So 30,000 lighters would be confiscated from less than 2% of all the travelers.

That's crazy. Well, about 20% of the population smokes in North America, and it's probably much higher in other parts of the world. I would think that 30,000 lighters is probably a very small percentage of the number of people who fly every day, because most people probably know that you can't bring a lighter onboard. I'm guessing at least a few hundred thousand people fly every day, so maybe 5%?
