I have a good life... by the standards of a good life, but what does it all mean? I try to convince myself that something matters, and the only thing I can come up with is the love I have for my girlfriend. If it wasn't for her, I don't know if I'd still be here today because I just want to see what's beyond this, if there even is anything afterwards

If it wasn't for her, I don't know if I'd still be here today because I just want to see what's beyond this, if there even is anything afterwards. I enjoy life, and I am happy with what I believe because I don't have to worry about what comes next after being here in this life. I just want to see other people's opinion's on the subject, I don't really care what happens after I die.

In short, it doesn't. But that's the joy of embracing nihlism: when none of it "matters", then you are free to please yourself.
Why does life have to "matter" or have "meaning"? You've been taught all of your life that there is a "higher" purpose, a greater order, and a point to it all. Even if you don't buy it, subconciously those hooks are planted deep in your psyche. So look at it from the other end: You're the end result of 15+billion years of cosmic churning, 4 billion years of evolution, and 10,000 years of civilization. What does it matter if there is a meaning, you're a statistical burp in the cosmos (see Drake's equation). That's not disheartening, it's enlightening!!! You are free to be whatever you want to be, regardless of what anyone thinks.
So find the meaning that works for you: make people happy. Make yourself happy. Make people think. Make people hate. Make people love. Ignore it all and dive in to your belly button in search of some higher truth. Do what you want. (I'd suggest trying to do no harm... but hell, you don't learn if someone doesn't get hurt.) The meaning might come, the meaning might not... but the fun is in the journey.
I'd also make one more suggestion, hang out as long as you can. You may be right, and there is something after this (and it'll still be there no matter when you get there). But you may be wrong...

I always look at it this way: I'll never know for sure what comes next until I get there, and I don't want to get there until I have to. I also figure that if there is anything there, it's a good idea if I try every day to have a positive attitude do my best to be nice to other people. It's a start, and I can say that in my own life, very good things have grown from that point. It took a while, but it was a simple starting point that I could handle.

You sound unchallenged. I felt the same way just a handful of years ago. I am agnostic, and it sounds like you might be the same way--or atheistic--because most religious people don't tend to talk that way.
My motivations for doing what I do today are the fact that I don't want to know yet, and I feel that this life is my one and only chance to do something with myself. I'm going to college to do something I love doing, whether it ends up being a career or not.
I also had kids, which will open your eyes like nothing ever will again. When you are ready to do that, you won't ever have this "nothing matters" outlook any more. Just give it a little time.

This is the beginnnig of true spirituality. When we humans see that this universe and EVERYTHING (ourselves, others, etc.) doesn't last, we respond to it by 1) creating meaning by either defining what a meaningful life is (and then trying to align ourselves with that) or by defining a creator and an afterlife; or 2) by not being able to deal with it and falling into utter despair. However, if we can avoid both of these mis-responses, we can then look for the experience that others who have had your realization went for: an experience that permanently resolves the issue and, apparently, makes people incredibly happy. People of all different backgrounds (religious, not religious) have had this enlightenment experience. Read '3 Pillars of Zen' for a zen perspective.

I understand how your feeling. In this big world with all of these people it's hard to be happy all of the time. And I believe in God and his son Jesus Christ but sometimes I'm sad because is this all there is to living? Waking up and going to sleep everyday. I try to make the best of each day and have as much fun as I can because life is too stressful to be worried about tomorrow.

You are at an awesome place! Yes, you matter in the world. You have a purpose and place to fill. Others need you in that place. I believe that you can begin to know what that purpose is once you can begin to relate to God. That's done through Christ first, and then by the spirit (note the little "s" in John 4:24).
Press through this season. On the other side of it is a lot of revelation about who you are and what your purpose is.
Best to you!

If you dont love yourself, then the love you have for anyone else is not true love. Learn to love yourself, and life's possibilites are endless. Good luck. Im not gonna preach to you, but I dont know where I would be without God. Thats your choice, however. Either way, find love for yourself. You matter. Girlfriends come and go.

A good life doesn't matter ... the "love" you feel for your girlfriend means nothing too. You are right, nothing in this world matters.
But store up your treasures in heaven, where they are burglar-proof, fire-proof and anything else that might come along proof lol.
Seek the things that really matter.

Try this.
Remember, Praying is not just about talking to God, you also need to listen. God is speaking to you 24/7 but you are not listening when you are so busy asking and talking. Quiet your mind and listen for the small still voice of God. Give it enough time and you will hear it. Try it, it may take a while but if you ask sincerely it will happen for you.

you are looking at thing as if everything was about today, and most people do that as far as God goes, but what about you do you look into the future to see how you would like things with you girlfriend. so you also might want to loook into the future and learn about the peace and love of God and soon you will find God is your true love peace and joy to you
