There should be no punishment, because the drive through is only as fast as the staff inside. Sometimes it is faster and easier to park your vehicle, stop wasting the gas while staying in line running the motor, walk to the counter, and order your food. Why is everyone so lazy anyway - and impatient besides. The world has become a demand-it-immediately-if-not-sooner place full of stressed out, burned out people. Gosh, I walk in every time, get great to-go service, and save myself a bit of gas in the process. Back to your question: Anyone can order any amount at a drive-through window as long as they have the money to pay for it. It is not a 5-items-or-less line. It is not always the large orders that make things slow either. It could be that they just dumped in the fries or ran out of cooked burger disks and had to get more raw ones from the freezer. If you go to a place like Steak n Shake or some Burger Kings, they are making it "your" way and so it will take a bit longer to process your order as well - the guy in back of you could very well be cussing you out for your teeny tiny order that takes a bit to cook. Be patient, if you are willing to hang out in your car wasting your life away, talk to a pal on the phone, read a book, clean your fingernails, pay your bills, do some air guitar to the radio, whatever, but relax - don't blame it on the people with the families - they have to eat too, may have a a baby in the car or a problem that you are unaware of, and may be in just as big of a hurry as you are! Happy drive time!

It's a drive-thru, not an express lane. If you want a line that limits how much people get in front of you, go to a grocery store. The only rule that a drive-thru has is that you have a car.
If you have spent a significant portion of your life waiting in line at a drive-thru, chances are you won't have to deal with that for too long. You will probably soon have a heart attack from all the grease from the food and the stress from worrying about how much the people in front of you order.

Maybe it's a large family who's short on time. Would you rather wait behind several cars with small orders?
I'll tell you what bugs me, the guy in front who won't pull up far enough for the following cars to get next to the odering speaker.
And of course the punishment is eating the fast food. Yech!

First, think why is that person in the drive thru. I am a mother of three very young girls. I cannot leave them in the car and go into the restaurant to order. I cannot take them out of the car into the restaurant because I DO NOT have 5 to 6 hands to hold onto them to get through the parking lot safely and then carry the food and hold their hands to get back to the car again. So please realize that sometimes, there is a very good reason for going through the drive through. I have often ordered food for five or more when I go out with them and it is a safety issue. I would rather get out of my car and stand in a line inside to get the food. It insures that the food is correct. Another reason I have used the drive through is when I fell on ice in a parking lot and injured my leg and therefore could not get out of the car to order in the restaurant. WHY are you unable to get out of YOUR car and go into the restaurant to order your food when you only have 1 order to place?

If its taking so long why don't you go in side and order. A drive Thru is just that , a drive Thru. Its for people who don't want to get out of their cars.

Quit your whining. Drive thru is exactly that. A drive thru. It doesn't matter how many you order for. It's fast food and should be fast whether you order for one or for twenty. It's not fresh anyways. If you're too impatient...get out of your car and go in and order.
It's a drive thru...not the grocery 10 items or less express lane. It's for those of us who are too lazy to get out of our vehicles.

the drive thru is meant for anyone "driving thru". there is no punishment, sorry. but how about for the one person in the car at McDonalds who spends 10 minutes deciding what they want? It's McDonalds! You know what they have, you've been there 10000000 times. Know what you want before you go!

They should be forced to sit behind an elder woman who is hard of hearing and vision in paired ordering for the entire convalescent home. Then they know how it feels! Hang in there.

Have some patience. Though it is annoying when they take forever to decide and then all they get is something under $2! Very large orders should be done inside out of courtesy.
