Not ALL are, but most are. It is the gene carried by the white coat color. Many animals are affected by it. White Bull terriers have a similar problem, as do white boxers and other breeds.
Cats with "odd" eyes...one blue and one green, can be deaf on the blue-eyed side only.

ALL white cats with blue eye are deaf if the have any hairs of another color the are not deaf
If the have one or two black hairs on one side of the face the oppisite ear is deaf

Thats not true. It's usualy just common among the white cat itself. But anyhow, that gene is dominant, so if the mother is carrying it and passes it on, than the kitten is bound to be deaf. They also cannot see as well in the night.

It has to do with the genes. I don't know if all white, blue-eyed cats are deaf, but if they are, it would mean that the genes for fur colour, eye colour, and deafness are on the same chromosome.

Rumors get started and after time people believe them.
Just like a cell phone at a gas station, it won't blow it up. But due to rumors going around most states have put a warning on gas pumps to not use a cell phone.
Sad when even government listens to rumors.
