Use toothpaste - it is a mild abraisive, and can solve minor issues on CDs.

Scratches are hard to fix.

However grime such as finger prints, drool, and dust come off pretty nicely with a dab of dish soap and running water. Run the disc under the water, gently spread the dish soap around on the disc with your finger. Rinse thoroughly. Dab dry with a terry cloth towel or a soft paper towel. Do not rub!

Just did it 20 minutes ago so my son could watch a movie.

I've done it dozens of times and have yet to ruin a disc this way.

You can't remove scratches, but you can clean grime with a HMV radial CD cleaner.

I have one of those disc doctors it seems to work pretty good. Cd's that I thought where completely trashed work like new again. They cost like 30 bucks but its worth it. Make sure to buy the motorized one though, doing it by hand really sucks.

You can't get scratches off, but you can get grime off. Stores sell special wipes to do this, but if you can't your hands on those just use a Kleenex or tissue or something and gently wipe it off.
