Religion is one because, so many people are religiously strict that they loose sight of the needs of a lost soul and needy heart. Imposters because so many people claim to be chosen and apart of God's Kingdom and they really don't even know God for themselves. Compromises because we let the world and our experiences and feelings influence the interpertation of the word of God. How do we defeat that? We need more sincere people who are seeking and maintaining a personal relationship with God. Be true to God and what he says. Make loving God natural. Make it your way of life and everything else will fall into place.

If by Church you mean the one led by the Pope, then I think that the three challenges are:
1 - Pedophilia performed by the priests
2 - religious intolerance against Jews and Muslims
3 - full equality for woman in the Church
All of these points should be addressed by the Pope, but should be pushed by it's people.

1. Developing a theology which is open to the truths of scientific naturalism and critical social theory.
2. Purging its teaching of ancient doctrines which obscure its central message of forgiveness, hope, and justice.
3. Aligning its witness to the struggle of human beings for creative fulfillment and freedom from social, political, and economic oppression.
Who is responsible for those? Every one of the people of God. Including you!

Reality, science, and education. Education is religions biggest threat. No one is responsible for meeting these challenges, doing so would be immoral.
