My uncle served in the Royal Navy during WW2. He once showed me his discharge papers and they listed his last unit as being HMS Odyssey, however neither Janes nor the web appears to have a reference to this elusive ship/shore establishment. Has anyone heard of this?

Don't know if this will help, but I entered HMS Odyssey and WW II and a site called WWII Awards for RN Bomb and Mine Disposal came up. One of the men (all British it seemed) named Ronald Henry Saull served on the HMS Odyssey from 1944 to 1945 in and around Normandy.

Hope this helps.

It was officially a Naval administration centre established in a hotel in Ilfracombe North Devon. Recently I spoke to an ex Royal Marine in his 90's who told me without hesitation that it was known in the service as hush hush. My father served in WWII and he,amongst other things was trained in diving and the removal of booby traps on sunken vessels. He went in DDay +1.
