My boss is muslim and I want to have him for dinner/dessert. Can you eat baked items with vanilla extract?? It contains alcohol, but you don't use very much of it, and the alcohol is cooked out. Any other suggestions on food to avoid? I know pork and alcohol....

There is a halal butcher in town, a middle east meat market. If I cook this at my house, is it still haram?

Hey there, Becca, I sincerely thank you for caring about the matter :)
Well I would try my best to answer your question :
1. Any sort of alcohol is not allowed. Basically any food that might affect your reasoning capability and other faculties are to be avoided by a Muslim.
2. No pork because Muslims think pork contains substantial amount of uric acid which are not drained out of the body system of a pig ( as it is in a human's case....not to say that it is allowed to eat humans or something ...hehe)
3. Animal-based gelatin (while making dessert) are best avoided too, if you can manage that
4. Also beef, chicken or lamb can only be eaten if the animals were slaughtered quickly and as painlessly as possible ( by a sharp knife rather than blunt tools or shooting etc.), with all the blood drained out , as blood is harmful for body if intaken.
Don't fret too much about all of these things. You are already being a great person :) Just maintain the basics ( like 'no pork and alcohol' thingy) and try your best about the others and and if your boss is a good Muslim he shall certainly value your effort.
Have a great time :)

I think you need to ask him if the vanilla thing is ok. Alcohol consumption is prohibited because it creats intoxication. If
alcohol is used in some medicine I don't think it is not ok.
Alcohol is not something like meat. It's a chemical which
can be converted to completely different chemical. I guess after
cooking the alcohol in the vanilla will not exist. But the best thing is to ask him.
And buy only Halal or Kosher meat for him.

Actually any meat that you probably have is haraam for your boss. Because muslims may only eat meat that has been slaughtered lawfully and most store bought meats are not halal. So just stick to vegies. Avoid any meat. If he/she is a good muslim they will question the source of any meat you put in front of them.

Im glad to know that you are inviting your Boss.
First thing to keep in mind is from which country/ancestry your boss belongs. Keep in mind try to serve him anything made of Vegetables, as he wont eat meat untill its HALAL which is totally lawful and slaughtered by hand. Serving snacks is totally fine he wont mind eating cookies or a dessert, just be careful that you try and avoid alcohal.
Also try to make something which he would like, something from his cuisine. You can try and find out all cusines by place of origins and narrow your search.
And last but not the least, its not the menu that he would like, but it is the respect which counts.

if its a meat, then it should be zabeeha. that means, the name of Allah has been taken at the time of its slaughter.
Thats how the food becomes halaal.
