It is a voice and video over IP service. It's FREE. You can have chat, voice calls, or video conferencing for FREE on your computer with anyone else in the world as long as you both have the software installed and a high speed connection. MSN messenger, Yahoo Messenger, plus many others have similar service, although SKYPE let's you do conference calls, (similar to MAC iChat and AIM.) You can also use it to call land and mobile lines, although you generally have to pay for this.

Skype was formally the sister software of Kazaa as it uses the same technic of connecting via P2P. This gives you ability to have actual clear conversations with a person on another computer line. Skype is also a VOIP service now that is currently allowing free calls to the states & canada to an actual phone line. If you call out to another country certain rates apply.

Skype is a VOIP service that is free. It basically means that you can communicate over the internet (vocally) with either a microphone or a specialized computer-ready phone that plugs into your in-line jack. Skype can call anywhere in the world for free as long as the recipient has skype.

Skype is a company that provides a software package that lets you make phone calls over your computer to a regular telephone number. This works best if you have DSL, a cable model, or similar fast connection to the internet. You download skype software from skype.com. If you have friends who downloaded skype, you can call them on their computer (you need a headset and a microphone, or headset/microphone combination), or you can call a regular telephone number anywhere in the world for 2c/minute. Go to Skype.com for more info.

It's a cool, new IM service that lets you make phone calls from your PC or laptop. You don't pay long distance charges. IT IS GREAT! Not just for Skype users, you can call anyone anywhere. My kids just called me from their PC and I am not hooked up to Skype, yet. It is so awesome I am going to check it out right away!!

It's a sort of an IM service for calling people (using voice). It's free from computer to computer; but you need credits to call a regular phone from a computer (but it's still cheaper than calling from a phone). MSN and Yahoo also let you use voice, but skype tends to have better audio quality.
