1. Get fit - really fit - doing a regular mix of cardio, flexibility and isometrics! Run, swim, cycle, stretch and lift some medium sized weights regularly. No point learning how to move if you can't move with speed and with real strength!
2. Have a really healthy diet - no fast food!
3. You will have to fight for real against some opponents eventually so start off with either/or both boxing and wrestling as these styles cover most of the basics of street fights and are in a safe, controlled but realistic environment. If you can also learn brazilian jujitsu or submission fighting, that is most important for when you are fighting someone on the ground where most street fights end up.
4. Read about and watch great fighters of all styles - UFC, Pride, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling (Read about Martin "Farmer" Burns - he is a true legend! Also Gene Labelle and Bruce Lee are both great writers as well as being great fighters.)
5. Avoid street fights unless you cannot avoid one and then fight for your life (no joke!) and you will survive.

Get yourself into really good shape. Run, weights, abs, whatever and everything you can come up with. Then get a heavy bag, or put a whole lot of padding (duct tape and towels, or whatever) around a telephone post or tree, and beat the crap out of it as much as you can. Don't try to get fancy, just do what feels fast and powerful. Then do it some more. Not just fists, but elbows, knees, and simple kicks too. Look at videos and learn how to fall. Set the heavy bag down on the ground and fight it there too with you on top of it, under it, or next to it. Get a length of broomstick and practice swinging and thrusting a weapon so you can use objects to defend yourself if needed too. If you start doing all this stuff outside, then sooner or later someone will be interested and maybe want to train with you which will make it way more effective. Good luck and stay strong.

There are many free or inexpensive martial arts classes available. Check with your Community College, YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs and so on. The key to remember when taking any of these classes, no matter how much you train, there is always going to be someone better. Never start a fight, learn how to avoid a fight, but when necessary, learn how to end a fight quickly and decisively.

This would depend on what you want to learn. Jujitsu? Judo? Karate? Tai-chi? Kung-fu?

It would also depend on why you want to fight. Is it for self defense? In this case, you douldn't want to learn either Tai-chi or Kung-fu, since Tai-chi is used for exercise and relaxing, while Kung-fu is used by Hollywood because it looks cool.

Judo deals with grapplings, and is most effective for on-the-ground fighting. Karate is all right, however would not be affective for up close and personal fights.

Mui-Thai kickboxing seems to be the best form, since it works well for all kinds of fighting. I don't know of any Mui-Thai trainers, but I'm sure you could find something.

If you live in a big city, there should be PLENTY of trainers to help you learn a specific style. Learn about the style you want first.

You could also try variating things, learning several styles, that way you get the best of various styles, and using them to your advantage.

This could be the least expensive option, if you like this idea, watch martial arts fights on TV, and try practicing the moves you see. Also, try getting a (trusted) friend of yours, and try duking it out with him. Just don't kill each other. You could learn from his mistakes, and improve your fighting as well.

I knew the N word comments would be here, LOL!

If going the solo route:
Visit the library for FREE reading material.
Get a heavy bag, that will be your best starter equipment for punching AND especially important for kicks, unless you train specifically for it, your kicks are very weak and you want your potentially MUCH stronger legs in the mix.
Get free weigh barbells, start low and buy heavier as you need them, discount sporting goods store in your area is best bet, pay by the pound and buy a video or book on using them PROPERLY, technique is crucial.
Without strength, you haven't a chance against a serious opponent.
See your doctor first, if you have one, and ask for measurements so you can see your progress and get advice/seal of approval of your plan.

It will be hard to teach yourself how to fight. You must be very motavated and have some kind of training to go by..I suggest that if you want to teach yourself, buy a guide to the martial art of your choice ( ebay is a good start) and practice. ALOT!

You first need to understand that 50% of fighting is psychological, 30% defence and 20% attack. If your calling on the last 20% its gotta be in you - you can never be taught it.

As for Jake - get a life loser

Sign up with a local martial arts dojo. Karate, Kung Fu, etc.

Or sign up at the local community college or YMCA for self defense classes. If you want to be a black belt or a master you need to join a dojo.

Or to do it yourself go to the library or bookstore and buy some books and practice the moves in them.

You should have a decent understanding of how to fight... so just start making up your stances, moves and such... Bruce Lee made up his own style.
