The Passion of the Christ recieved an R rating.
This is because it was extremely accurate in it's detail in the last hours of Christ. (remember, crucifixions were extremely bloody, violent, and might I add painful events.)
A toned down version of the Passion of the Christ came out in theaters April 2005, a year after the original film's realease, and it was just in time for Easter. The film makers tried to tone down the violence enough for a PG-13 rating, however the MPAA thought it was still too violent for that rating, and gave it an R rating anyways. I don't think that the toned down Passion of the Christ was released on DVD, but I could be wrong...

Sorry to offend your hemaphobic side, Joey, but a lot of blood is generally the result of a crucifixion! Also, stop imposing your modern-day, creampuff ideas on what is too bloody or not too bloody on the ancients, who didn't seem quite as "grossed-out" as you are!

That movie sucked, and the scenes where he was beaten were stupid. The movie should have been in King James English (sounds the best) and should have been taken strictly from the Gospels (no extra crap). He wasn't even naked on the cross, if I remember correctly.

R. just watched it. it was very bloody and could scare little kids. okay i admit it- i fastforward the part when Jesus was being beaten up- i just cant watch that without cringing. shows what christ went through for all of us and even the ones that put him to death- he prayed for them.
