Seriously i'd gather up a few of the people in my neighborhood with petitions for the Mayor and City Counselmen to start doing what they are paid to do. Make effective and useful decisions that will help rid your communities with the proper protection that they need from all of the violence. I'd keep attending every meeting the city gives to dicuss the ongoing situation and i'd keep the Mayor's office flooded with phone calls until someone takes notice and does someting about it. Talk to the schools see if they will allow you to hold meetings there to express the concerns about the safety of our neighborhoods, schools and children. Call your local news stations let them know what your doing and why?Or if your not ready to take on that much of a responsibility i'd try to save up enough money to move.

i heard somewhere that a town played Barry Manilow non-stop over loud speakers and the crime rate dropped. not sure where you're at, but what the hell, give it a try. neighborhood watches are a good idea. you shouldn't have a problem getting neighbors involved if the problem is as bad as you say. maybe want to push for more community centers in your area. most of the time, the "gang bangers" everyone wants to label are just bored kids who have no one or nothing better to do. mentoring programs would be another idea. maybe while we're trying to figure out how to stop the violence, we should also come up with ways to deal with ignorant racists who still plague our society

I'm sorry that you live in such a violent place. While no place is completely safe, I'd recommend that you move if you can. If you can't move, then take precautions to make your home safe for you and your family. Live your life in such a way that others see you as a peaceful warrior, not a gang banger riddled by violence. If you feel powerful, then start an after school program that improves kids' self esteem and teaches them skills to cope with the violence in your town. Work closely with law enforcement agencies and schools to develop programs that help kids reach their potential. My neighborhood is so safe that we rarely lock our doors...the house next door is for sale...won't you be my neighbor?

You might look into the Alternatives to Violence Project or Nonviolent Communication. See links below.

Maybe you can talk to the township or city municipality and ask them to create a place for the kids to go. If you don't have those drug free school zones maybe they can begin that program where you are. Basically it is going to take one person to get a bunch of people motivated into action, most people do nothing until one of their loved ones dies. Contact people who have suceeded in creating programs to get the violence out of their areas. Good Luck.

keep some video survellence going on and set up neighborhood watch programs. Also try to integrate some good witness protection programs. Are gangs the source of violence or is it individuals. individuals are easier to arrest and shut down as oppossed to gangs which seem to always have members who stay around. make harsher gang relations laws to encourage children to avoid gangs and gang activity.

Do you have neighborhood watches? Otherwise, I'd get in touch with your police commissioner. In Milwaukee, WI, they ended up increasing the patrols to help end the violence. And, it is on the decrease from last year...the program was just implemented...

I would move asap
If I couldn't move, I would work in the community. have community watch groups. Support your loacl police
deparatment...encourage the local schools to have classes in stress and voilence reduction. Start volenteer groups to clean up the areas where the thugs hang out. Invest in some lighting in the dark places where these gather.

The commuity needs to be on their knees in prayer.

Have classical music played over all the loudspeakers in the town. It has a soothing effect. Also, have a band of bigger older guys go in and intimidate the thugs who are ruining it for all.

Find out the reasons for the violence and try to solve them if they are within your control. If not leave it to God!
