If the room is small, a monochromatic look can make it feel larger: match the curtains to the wall paint. This can work well for a formal or casual setting.
If space is not an issue the rest of the furnishings and accessories should help you decide a color, the natural light can help decide the fabric weight...
Oh dear, I might be making this complicated. You can take pictures into a curtain place (or even the home depot home decorator sections and get their advice)
Personally I get great enjoyment out of browsing home decorating magazines for ideas. Red is a popular color, there should be plenty of examples out there for all types of rooms.

Depends on what room it is - what is it's function and the mood you are aiming for. It also depends on the size of the room and what kind of weather you have.

If you are in the tropics warm weather - light airy sheers like pale mossy green or pale yellow is just eye-catching - heavy velvet and brocades for cold weather.

If the room is small, you might want a monochromatic scheme - red sheers can be stunning and won't break up the room.

For a large formal dining room a pretty brocade print with red in it with jabots/valance would be awesome

Difficult to give much detail or specifics without knowing more about the room, the style you are going for and the function.

You could go with a cream color, or gold. Or you could be daring and go for something like bright yellow or lavendar! It depends on the color of the red, too. If it's a brick red, probably something light would be good.

I painted my bedroom red, and I bought sheer black curtains with a wavy pattern on them from Ikea. I absolutely love how it looks all together.

well it depends on what kind of feel you are looking for in your room.
orange or brown-warm and cozy
yellow-bright and cheery
black-elegant and dark
grey-proffesional
purple/gold-elegant
white/pale-elegant and cozy and warm
green-no, dont do that, it will look like christmas all year
blue-patriotic

I personally think that red looks best with purple or an off whiteish pale color
