So you want to find out if he is gay? You could break the ice by asking him what he thinks of homosexuals. Pay attention to how he reacts to the question. You should be able to pick up on if he also likes you by paying attention to body language...a hand on the shoulder from time to time could be a sign. You also might just ask him directly once you know how he feels about homosexuality in general. I think honesty is the best policy in these situations. However, from what little you have said...it sounds like he's just a friend and there isn't much more to it.
