I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I believe that there has to be a higher power at work, but I haven't been able to prove to myself that this is actually the case. Do any of you have good arguments, either for or against? Could there be multiple gods? Or are we a cosmic accident?

Direct experience - otherwise, what people are doing is believing in projections and what they think god is like. Direct experience (enlightenment) of God has been achieved by people of all different religions and no religion at all -- Jesus, the historical Buddha, Meister Eckhart and St John of the Cross (christian), Rumi (Islam). Read '3 Pillars of Zen' for a Zen perspective.

Nobody can prove conclusively that God exists. By the same token, nobody can prove conclusively that God does not exist.

However, there is some evidence that may support a belief in the existence of God.

In the book, "the Case for God", Peter S. Williams deals with the following:

1. The Problem of Evil
2. The Moral Argument.
3. Cosmological Arguments
4. Design Arguments
5. The Anthropic Teleological Argument
6. Arguments from Common Consent, Authority and Religious Experience
7. Arguments from Desire and Absurdity
8. Non-evidential Arguments - Pascal's Wager and the Right to Believe.

Two major arguments against the existence of God are:

1. It is not scientific.
2. The Problem of Evil.

I do not have the time to comment on each of these. Suffice it to say that in the final analysis, EITHER a belief in God OR a belief in evolution requires much faith.

First, answer this question...Do you ever pray? If you do, then to whom? If not, then to whom do you turn to in times of real trouble, not like a flat tire, but when someone passes away? I used to be what I considered an Atheist. I did not believe in God, or Gods, or anything. Just life and death. Done. However, I knew deep down there was a seed of belief, because I would pray to what I thought was God when I was in times of deep despair. So, I answered my own question. I believed, otherwise, who was I praying to? Next, other than delving into Christianity or Islam or any other existing religion, look around you. Do you really believe that all of existence just "happend"? That it was by chance that Earth is just the perfect distance from the Sun, that the orbit of our planet and rotation is based on some theory, say "The Big Bang"? That we as humans, crawled out of the sea and evolved into what we are now? Please!!! The most obvious answers are right in front of our eyes for everyone to see. There is a "creator". Science can neither prove nor disprove the existence of God. It can't even explain what holds all matter together (ie. the God Particle, look it up). Faith is the key, and what it all boils down to. Faith, directly from Websters under faith, 2b definition...firm belief in something for which there is no proof. You either do believe, don't believe, which state of mind can be affected either way through life experience good and bad. My suggestion, pick up a Bible (New King James Version), read the first four books of the New Testament, and decide for yourself. Good luck, and may God bless you.

Take a look at the amazing universe all around you - The galaxies, stars and planets... the beauty of mountains and trees and everything that lives, grows and breathes on the Earth. No sane person believes that the great complexity of the natural universe in general and living organisms in particular could just exist fully formed with no cause and no origin.

So, how can any sane person possibly believe that all this amazing complexity is sourced in an intelligent designer who just exists fully formed with no cause and no origin? That would be completely absurd. The only possible explanation is that the universe had a natural origin, and that the order and complexity we observe in the universe has arisen over billions of years from disorder and chaos by the effect of unthinking, undirected natural processes. Science, in the form of cosmology and biology, shows us that this is indeed the case.

The idea of a creator god has no explanatory value - It is intellectual laziness, a non-answer, not a solution to the question of existence but a way of avoiding the question. It should and will be consigned to history along with all our other naive superstitious beliefs.

I think it is easier to prove that an all-mighty being doesn't exists. This is because we exist for a finite time(approximately 80 years). If you subtract 80 years from infinite years you get infinity. Thus 80 or any amount of time substituted is equal to 0. I find that both your and my existence proves with out a doubt that their cannot be a being that is forever. That is a little off topic. If their is a God I would think him to be limited in his powers and time of existence. Furthermore he would not feel like a God to himself, only in our eyes would he be because he is more advanced. If their were 2 equally powerful Gods that are opposites, that could explain why a single God never interferes. I think the most likely explanation of life is as you put it; a cosmic accident. It is not much of an accident as much as completely random set of circumstance that eventually allowed us to question our own existence.

Cosmic accident ; cosmic force of nature.
God does not exist as expounded by religiosity.

For example God is supposed to be perfect so why would a perfect being create so much imperfection in the world?

Mt 12:38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
Mt 12:39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it,
Ro 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Ro 1:21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Ro 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

I can, circular logic to the rescue!

(1) The Bible says the Bible is true.
(2) Therefore the Bible is true.
(3) The Bible says God exists.
(4) Therefore, God exist.

CAN YOU PROVE TO ME THAT HE DOESN"T EXIST? This is an old question, one that has been answered many times over. At least give reasons why you think He doesn't.
