For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son (Jesus) so that who so ever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. [John 3:16]
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are one but also three separate parts of the one. Look at an egg for example: The shell can be the Father, the white can be the Son, and the yellow is the Holy Spirit. God can be in heaven AND on earth. He is omni-present. He can exist in MANY different places. Jesus prayed to His Father who was in heaven. Try reading the Bible closer also. All the answers are there. That is why the Bible says STUDY the Word to be approved of God. Don't just passively READ it.

God did not leave heaven to become Jesus. He impregnated Mary with a part of himself creating his son Jesus. God was up in heaven in the duration of Jesus's life just as He is now. When Jesus died for our sins, the Holy Spirit was created. Therefore there are 3 elements to God. Think of it like an egg. God is the yoke, Jesus is the egg whites, and the Holy Spirit is the shell. They are 3 separate entities but they make up 1 whole.

You have asked a question that religious scholars have asked for over 2000 years. There is no simple answer and there have been many who have been killed for asking. We owe our freedom to inquire to our American democracy. Some would try to abridge our freedom of speech and thought by promoting a religion and a dogma.
My best guess is that if Jesus was born of Mary, then Jesus and God were not one and the same at one point in time. That notion was somewhat popular before the Council of Nicaea. At the Council, dogma was promulgated and Christians increased persecution of Christians that still wanted to think.
My conduct with others has been heavily influenced by Jesus. Since I am not really afraid of dying, whether Jesus was sacrificed for my sins is not important. I am also prepared to slip off into oblivion, preferring not to spend eternity in the company of Jerry Fallwell or Pat Robertson. They seem certain that they will be going to heaven. I just hope that I do not go to the same location. I would like to spend time with Jimmy Carter and I like the local Lutheran pastor and his wife, though I am not Lutheran. I also like a Unitarian minister as well as the band at a local United Methodist Church.
Boy did I get off track.
It could be Jesus was talking to himself when he prayed to God.

No, you are minimizing God. God is far beyond our comprehension. God can exist in any form and as many forms as God wishes simultaneously, past, present and future. God can be Jesus, while still being God and still being the process of life itself and everything else in it.
God is the formless, genderless, omnipresent, eternal energy source which is the process of life itself. God is not a being, or an old guy with a long white beard and flowing robes sitting in a throne in some heaven in outer space somewhere. We are each an individuation of God, created of the same matter as God. Together we are the sum (son) total of God.

God is Omnipresent. This means He is everywhere at all times. He had no need to leave heaven. God's Spirit was made flesh in the man named Jesus of Nazareth.

I'd suggest you read the 3 major holy books. The Jewish Talmud, the Christian Bible, and the Muslim Qur'an.
Ideally, read them in their original languages. Though that's a rather tall feat for any person. The next closest thing would be to read different translation of each so your view isn't as skewed towards one interpretation/translation than an other.
That will bring you closer to the truth you seek than asking mere mortal humans what gods truth is.

No, God did not leave heaven. If he had, who would have been ruling the universe? Jesus was praying to his Father who was in heaven.
Jesus said this also at Luke 18:19: " And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God."
And here is another: John 14:28 "Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I." (So how can they be equal if one is greater than the other?)

No, he sent his only begotten Son.
TIME and again, Jesus showed that he was a creature separate from God and that he, Jesus, had a God above him, a God whom he worshiped, a God whom he called “Father.” In prayer to God, that is, the Father, Jesus said, “You, the only true God.” (John 17:3) At John 20:17 he said to Mary Magdalene: “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” (RS, Catholic edition) At 2 Corinthians 1:3 the apostle Paul confirms this relationship: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Since Jesus had a God, his Father, he could not at the same time be that God.
