It could mean that she is part chow, because a blue and black mark on the tongue is a trademark of chows. I wouldn't worry about it, unless it starts to get larger! Hope I helped!

If the skin is identical to the surrounding skin except for the colour its probably a birth mark; lots of dogs have them. Its just genetic and has nothing to do with Chow ancestry.
If the area is in any way different; raised, rougher, weeping, scabby; or changes (grows or roughens) then get the vet to check it out.

Nothing to worry about. It's most likely a birthmark. I know a Lab who has spot on his tongue too. However, if you notice the spot changing within a month, take him for a check-up.

Are you sure it's a purebred shepherd. I have a chow chow and they are known for having spots on their tongues. Blue black ones like you're describing. Perhaps your dog is a mixed breed shepherd/chow chow.
Otherwise, search on line or see a vet.
Good luck.

My Belgian Malinois, has a black spot on her tongue. It wasn't there when I first got her, but it appeared later. Vet said it was a birthmark. If only I could keep her from licking.....

the blue spot does not inevitably propose its a chow mixture. different breeds could have blue tongues. many times its a demonstration of undesirable breeding if a golden, lab, aussie, etc has a blue/black spot on the tongue. in case you may want to submit a image of her, it will be less difficult to inform what style of mixture she is.

lots of dogs have spots on the tongue. I think especially Chow or chow mixes. As my governer once said, "It's not a tumor!"

It could be a bite mark from another dog, happened to mine. Could be the scar from it. Nothing to worry about at all! But if it grows or changes colour check it out.

It's just a birthmark... I've had two dogs with spots on their tongues... They were both chow mixes, so... your dog is probably part chow?
