We have a 6-7 month old kitten and she is a tortoiseshell. When we got her, she had more black fur (to the point where people didn't want to adopt her because she was "too black")... Now, my husband and I are seeing more lighter hair coming in. Is this common for this cat species? We have another kitten that has minor tortoiseshell traits (the red/wine color), and more red seems to be showing up as an under color... Serious posts only.

A true tortoseshell cat often exhibits no white coloration at all and are usually male. The female tortoseshell, however have the white fur mixed with other colors variations (also known as calicos).
My folks have an 11 yr old female named Autumn that has orange, white, and black for in solid patches.

I think that as it's the same as most animals..when they get older more of their markings become visible. Example: I had a kitten that was born all white. As she got older the tips of her ears started turning grey then down her back and her feet and legs started turning the same color. She ended up being like a long haired siamese. I think as your kitten gets older you will see more colors and markings becoming noticeable and that will only make her more special to you. You will probably see more personality in her too. :)

Hair color for tortioseshell cats often change expecially during the summer months. My cats coat has changed since she was a kitten. That's just normal.
