The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, are a classification of vices used in early Christian teachings to educate and protect followers from basic human instincts. The church divided sin into two types: venial (forgiven through the sacrament of Confession) and capital (meriting damnation). Beginning in the early 14th-century, the popularity of the 7 deadly sins with artists of the time engrained them in human culture around the world. The generally accepted deadly sins are superbia (hubris/pride), avaritia (avarice/greed), luxuria (extravagance, later lust), invidia (envy), gula (gluttony), ira (wrath), and acedia (sloth). Each deadly sin is opposed by one of the corresponding Seven Holy Virtues.

Not all sin is the same. All sin is bad, and forgivable. The seven deadly are the worst of them. The worst traits of people. These are the sins that can break a society, which is why they are lumped together like this. Sloth, greed, gluttony, pride, wrath, envy, and lust are sins of a truely selfish nature. They make you lose sight of your purpose in life, and your ability to be productive. They make you hurt others. Being sinful this way makes you a parasite on your brother, instead of being his keeper.

Mahatma Gandi had a better list of sins. I think the authors of the bible would have used it instead if they'd thought about it.

Wealth without Work
Pleasure without Conscience
Science without Humanity
Knowledge without Character
Politics without Principle
Commerce without Morality
Worship without Sacrifice

The 7 deadly sins are not mentioned in the Bible. However, the principles are addressed in one form or another. Also, keep in mind, all sin is an abomination in the sight of GOD!!!

If you refer to the Bible and Bible alone, all sin is the same. There are no 7 deadly sins. The only thing that is deadly is to reject Jesus Christ as Savior.

1. According to the link below, a pope reshuffled a greek monk's list of 8 selfish behaviours to seven. Some of them can kill directly, like eating too much, whereas others, like lust, lead (under certain circumstances) to injurious social dynamics.

2. Sin is a myth (this is an opinion), although deadliness is clearly not.

all sin offends God and immediately cuts off our contact with Him because it makes Him disgusted weather you lie or murder someone or even refusing to help someone if you are perfectly able to do so. He can't get near us until we repent of the sin and ask forgiveness. He still loves us and wants us back to commune with Him but He can't until we are cleansed. think of a loving father whose son has just fallen in a manure pile. son, get cleaned up, i can't take the sight or smell of you. man puts the degrees on sin only for punishment reasons. the word deadly refers to the death of ones soul through Adam's sin. when you practice these sins you are of the world and have a "prideful look" which was Satan's "fatal" sin eons ago

They come from the false idea that some sins are worse than other sins. Sin is sin to God a liar is just as doomed as a murderer.

That's a Roman Catholic invention... "mortal sins". I have yet to see any other denomination use those in that way, though they will talk about them. Seems tradition is a hard thing to break, even when you are trying to be honest.
