Make it clear that you don't want to chat by putting on headphones or pretending to read a book or magazine. Works every time!

You could put on your earphones and listen to music while you read the magazine or a book, work a crossword puzzle. Usually people are pretty open to respecting what little space an individual has. Sometimes you may get a babbler--but not very often. UNLESS, that person is frightened of flying and their fear makes them want to have the company of the person sitting next to them.
You could ask, "Do you have a fear of flying?" If they say, "Yes," then maybe you could just be "available" when their fear hits them and they need to talk. Count it as a personal sacrifice, silently--to yourself---offer it up to God, and ask for a blessing for the person who is afraid.

Respond very shortly. Do not instigate conversation like asking any questions. You have 3 options #1 fall asleep #2 put your headphones on (you can pretend to watch the tv or listen to music, just turn the volume down) or #3 read a book.

Just politely tell them that you've had a very long day (or night as the case may be) and that you apologize for not being able to muster up some stellar conversation at the moment; that what you really need to do is just rest your brain and enjoy some quiet time and that you appreciate their understanding and consideration in the matter.

Respond to their chat and questions briefly, trying not to leave a comment open for further discussion, or make an excuse (need for a nap, rest your eyes because of a headache, sick tummy) as to why you don't feel up to chit chat.

Hi,I believe all the behaviors of people are reflexes to our behaviors. You can conduct and lead your communications with people and tell them what you really want them to do in a hidden manner.so e.g you can sighn the person beside you by your short but decent answers that you're not in mood for chatting.

I usually just say, I'm sorry, I need to close my eyes for awhile. It works without offending.
