Falconry is geting quite popular in the UK. This is due largly to the success of captive breeding & the import of the harris hawk[parabuteo unicinctus] wich has become very popular with falconers who do not have the time or facilities to fly the larger falcons or accipiters. I have seen a large increase in the number of people practicing falconry since the 1970's. It has also undergone a resurgance in the US. Scotland has always been a popular place to practice falconry. Particularly flying large falcons at red grouse a traditonal quarry for the peregrine Scotland & The North of England being the only places where you'll find the kind of moorland necessary to support this type of [waiting on] flight

I wouldn't say it was popular nowadays, there's only a couple thousand falconers out there, and I doubt more than half have their own birds. but it's one of the oldest professions. I used to practice falconry in Eastern Washington before I moved to Seattle. It takes a lot of time and effort, but there are few things that make you feel like you do watching a bird you know personally hunt. Glorious.
