I know there is no draft, and won't be one unless WWIII and WWIV both break out in Canada or Mexico at the same time. But, imagine if there were one, and a bunch of draftees skip out of the country. I think that since they decided to refuse the responsibilities of citizenship, theirs should be permanently revoked. What do you think?

thomas p -- Someone who is morally opposed to a certain war or war in general can always legally file for concientious objector status. I'm talking about people who just don't want the inconvenience of military service, so they run away.

I think I need to clarify something here. I'm not saying that a huge world war would be fought between us and Canada or Mexico, I'm saying that if either of those two countries were to become a theater of war in a huge global conflict, there might be a need for more soldiers than are willing to volunteer.

I agree with you. If you flee, you do not deserve your citizenship. American citizens owe allegiance and I believe running away is in a way, commiting treason.

Here's an excerpt from section 3 of The Constitution.

"whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States."

You are assisting the enemy by decreasing America's potential soldiers. It's like having one less man for the enemy to have to try and fight. Isn't than giving them "comfort"?

You can read more about "draft dodging" here. As for a war with Canada or Mexico, those countries are pretty low on the list or countries we might have a war with. Canada is probably even one of the most neutral countries. Try North Korea, or one of those ignorant Middle Eastern countries we haven't already beat the **** out of.

Well, it depends on the situation. If the war was defensive, such as the first and second world wars were (im English btw), then i would accept my conscription and fight. However, if it was an aggressive war against another country, i wouldnt fight. I would definatly refuse.
Why? Because im proud of my country and what it stands for, freedom, liberty etc and what that government would be doing was invasion. Im no imperialist, so i would not support the government

How does that sound? Am i a traitor? lol

POSTER
Ah ok. Yeah, running away is bad..i dont think deportation is the answer, maybe hey fear for their families or lives, some people just cant cope with that kind of stress..i'd say jail or asked to do somethign else to help war effort, ie, drive trucks, work in factories etc

No, not all wars are justified so not all people should be forced to fight in them...we have a volunteer military for a reason. It's not that easy to just be a conscientious objector. There is a long hard process of proving it and even then you aren't guaranteed anything. Just because you don't agree with a war doesn't make you any less of a citizen. If that were true over half of our country would need to be kicked out over the Iraq war.
Bush and Cheney know first hand how to dodge a war and they aren't being kicked out.

Well i figure if they're not willing to protect our country i think that's a great dishonor and they probably should have their citizenship revoked. I mean why else enlist in the army when your just gonna go running like a coward. But they should definately be charged for dishonoring our country.
Also i wouldn't consider fighting Mexico much of a war, it be more like us dominating them.

Is it supporting the constitution by trying to undermine it as many on the right having been trying to do by claiming this is a Christian country when the constitution specifically forbids the founding of a state religion or having a religious test for public office? Is it defending the troops to send them to war based on lies and distorted intelligence? Is it patriotism to threaten the government with armed insurrection because you don't like the fact a law passed by congress allows everyone to get insurance including those you hate for irrational and misinformed reasons? Because the right wings calls to strip people of their citizenship and subvert the constitution look more like treason than the criticism espoused by the left.

If war broke out in Mexico and Canada, where would said draft dodgers go? I say round them up and use them as fodder to protect those who put their lives on the line to protect us. Seriously though, draft dodgers should not only have their citizenship revoked, but they should be forced to watch Canadian Bacon until their eyes bleed.

i agree to a point. i think their citizenship should be suspended. yes, you are letting down your country in their time of need but not everyone is willing to die for their country. i for one am not. you also have to take into consideration peoples beliefs. not everyone believes in fighting for a decision that the government made and that the government believes in. how can you fight for something you don't agree with or believe in.
now as far as suspending their citizenship? i think its a great idea. skip the whole imprisonment (which is about $30,000 a year) and make them find another home.........temporarily. maybe 8-10 years. its punishment but not for the rest of your life.

Yes I think they should have their citizenship revoke if they are living in another country like a bunch were during the Vietnam War. They choose to live in Canada during that war and in my eyes they shouldn't have their American Citizenship papers. As for draft dogers who managed to live in the country of their brith, I would say let them keep their citizenship papers and let them live in the land of their brith for many of these people have been living in very bad condition while worried that they are being hunted down by authorites. These people shouldn't have their citizenship revoke because they lived in fear most of their lives of getting caught. While the draft dogers who lived here in Canada they live like kings going to and fo America and having the times of their lives I say those are the ones you stick it to not those the other ones who lived in fear of being caught while living in their own country.
