funny you should ask this REALLY !! I try to be honest as I can If thy ask me I say the truth if life has been going bad I answer "terrible Why Lie" !!! People always lie and say " oh I'm fine"!! They are lying !! LOL Butttttt in all honestly when people ask that it isonly out of habit . No one really cares to stand ther and REALLY listen to you tell all the good or bad things going on with you ( with the exception of a few really good friends). If all is going well I answer honestley " wonderful"..If i felt any better I would be paying luxery taxes !! LOL

2 things:
1) nowadays "hi, how are you doing" is sort of equivalent to just "hi"; i think this could be one reason
2) a lot of people don't really want to know how you are and just ask to seem polite and expect that you answer "ok" or more, but not less.
exceptions are the people who care about how you are. don't be pissed about it, its normal now. One thing you can try, what I do sometimes, is fully stop and demand again "hey! how are you?". most of the time they are surprised you care to know :)

not often enough so i start to play games with them - a few times i've given my mother a farce detailed description of my lack of health and impending death and she's never heard it.
why bother asking if you don't really want to know?
and yes, when i ask i really want to know and always wait for the response.

I have a theory about this, they ask to be polite, but really don't care how your day is going.
