...Here's a thought: instead of whining about the few rude New Yorkers you have met "once in a while", why don't you try being happy about meeting some "very, very, very nice people" from New York. My experience, as a New Yorker, is that they don't usually go off unless they have to deal with rude, inept idiots in a service industry.

Perhaps you should consider your glass half full instead of half empty.

I am originally from Pennsylvamia and have been living in NYC for 21 yrs. I find that people aren't necessarily mean, just very direct. They don't like to waste time beating around the bush. I find that easier sometimes and other times it's difficult if I'm having a "sensitive" day. LOL~

I have made closer and more loyal friends here in NYC than any where that I've lived.

Ok, having spent most of my life in NY & the last several in New England I'd have to say that NYers are very high strung. I think that comes from living in close proximity to so many other people & dealing daily with the inconveniences of long lines & traffic jams. Most NYers have a defensive wall & are more than willing to fight if they feel violated...whether that feeling is justified or not. However once you break through that wall I think NYers are a more personable bunch than people here in NE who are pleasant publically but hard to get to know personally. People here have a friendly persona but are hard to become friends with. Warm outside & chilly inside in NE & cold exterior warm interior in NY.

Perhaps they expect the best and anything else is totally unacceptable. You would probably have to live in the east coast to understand. Rude people in NYC is like saying all people from the South are dumb, all people from the East are air heads etc...

Actually in a recent experiment, they discovered that New Yorkers are the nicest in the cities they studied, they opened doors, helped pick up papers on the street and in general were pleasant all around.

People don't "go off" for no reason. Sounds to me like you're pissing them off. Since you work in the travel industry, you're probably ripping people off, which would cause anyone with a backbone to give you a verbal lashing.

That's very interesting. Recently Times magazine had posted New York as one of the top cities with polite people. I guess they should rethink that.

Having just come back from NY, I find they are the nicest people, I think it is just a stereotype.

Actually a study was done and people from New York City are the nicest and least rude people in the world.

I've not experienced what you seem to have experienced. I have generally found New Yorkers to be rather polite.
