Liver failure is the inability of the liver to filter toxins from the blood. It can be caused by alcohol, chemical poisons ,portal caval shunt , excessive fatty deposits, and various disease processes ie cancer and hepatitis. One interesting fact is that the liver can regenerate and heal itself to a certain degree. That is why they can do a partial liver transplant from a live donor.
