Are those good reasons to join??
Will i be able to keep in touch with my family often?

I wasn't in the Army, but the Marines. You get 2.5 days of leave a month, for a total of 30 days a year. There are also convalescent (if you have surgery) and humanitarion leave (if an immediate family members becomes deathly ill) which is not counted towards your annual leave. Barracks life can be hard, it gets boring so alot of guys drink and get in trouble, sounds like you wouldn't be one though. There are usually a couple gyms on the bases and working out is a great way to pass the time and to relieve stress. If you are shy, joining the military might bring you out of your shell, it did for me; sometimes not always in a good way though. I used to be afraid to say my opinion or to bring attention to myself, but some peoples bad attitudes and negativity got to me and I started firing back, shocked the crap out of them. The military does make you stand a little bit straighter though. And when you're in the civilian world in uniform, or mention to people that you're in the military, the sense of pride is definitely there. Most people appreciate the military, ignore the ones that don't, they are few and far between. As for being a mechanic, you will learn alot, but because of that MOS, there is a very likely chance that you will be deployed, that is something you have to prepare yourself for. The fighting is kinda bad, but I have friends over there now and the worst thing for them is the boredom and the monotony, it's like living that Bill Murray movie over and over again, where not much changes. Plus, they say it's not as bad as reported by the news. If you don't get deployed and stay stateside, there are things available to do after work. In the Marines, they had the Single Marine Program where events were planned for single Marines; trips to Price is right, Jay Leno, football and basketball games, sea world, san diego zoo, big bear mountain. Alot of the times it was free or they just had to pay the transportation costs. There's also college and a part time job if you want the extra money. You will learn discipline initially, but it's up to you if you maintain it or not. I saw some turn into crappy military and others have awesome motivation, it's your call. Since you want to be a mechanic, I don't know if you'll have access to an email account but there's usually a library on base with internet access where you could email, you could always get a cell phone. I think Army boot camp is about 8 weeks long and is somewhat physically demanding, but if you want to be challenged physically and mentally, I would recommend Marine Corps out of the four branches. There will be times when you want to quit and go home, but it was the biggest challenge of my life. Or if you want harder, try the Navy Seals or the Green Berets. Go talk to an Army recruiter and see what they have to offer, but a heads up, whatever they promise you, Get It In Writing!!!! If you don't, it's your word against your recruiters. I think you'll do great no matter what branch you join. Good luck.

I think you should choose red13orcid as best answer. She covered everything I would have.
There is one thing to consider though. If you join the military straight out of high school, you could retire at 45 with full pay. Plus, after twenty-plus years in, you'd probably be at a pretty high paygrade.
You should be able to keep in touch with your family on a regular basis once you're out of basic and AIT.
Mechanic is a great MOS to choose, but I would actually recommend going for being a fueler. That's what my hubby does, and the great thing about it is, it's such an unusual MOS. So you're not going to have 50 fuelers stepping on your toes. You'll still be highly deployable, but that's cool too, because you get a huge re-up bonus down range, especially as a fueler. Last I heard, it was 22,500.
By the way, Air Force has better pay, and better bases. That's something to consider.

The air force has the same pay as the army as well as the rest of the armed forces. Everyone is paid based on their rank and time in service, an E-5 with 4 years in the army has the exact same base pay as one in any of the other services.Etc. Etc....

Mechanics are badly needed in the military. But god bless them, if it weren't for those mechanics then the army would come to a standstill. They kept my units combat ready under the most desperate conditions.

My fiance is in the Army. I do not recommend that you join. Its not only tough on you but also on the people who love you. It drains you physically, mentally and emotionally. Plus, if you joined the Army now, you have a good chance of being sent to a war zone. The only reason a person should ever join any branch of the military is to serve their country. If thats not your reason, then definately don't join.

Yes, those are very good reasons to join the service.
Yes, you will get thirty days of paid leave (days off) a year.
Make sure that you look into it further and get want you want in writing. Oh, and make sure that you know what your getting into, where do you think these busted up vehicles that you will be fixing are coming from?

Actually, you can join at 17 with parents consent.

You need to stop asking dumb questions and finally talk to a recruiter. Just go talk to a recruiter. You keep asking questions and all you get is mixed reviews. Make up your own damn mind. You have weird views about the military. You didn't even know the pay scale. Talk yes TALK to someone who is certified to help you.

Those are pretty good reasons to be in the army. I mean im too prissy to be a manly army chick, but ou do have to think about actually going to war also. Will you be mentally prepared for that?

Yes, you get 30 days of leave a year! Join the army, and remember, it is a job, and it is volunteer. Bargain for your job and have a great time.

it is good training, but combat is rough (you might actually see one of your buddies take a round, rpg or mortar) just remember that its not all fun and games, famililies do suffer a little but usually they are more proud of thier sons and daughters than anything. If you don't think you can handle watching people die or even suffer than its not for you, and the army doesn't need anymore soldiers who can't handle that.
