I am not certain which aspect of the Outsiders you enjoy, but the following authors have young adult characters who face difficult challenges in interesting ways. My students and I love Gary Paulsen books if you haven't read those yet. You might really enjoy Canyons if you liked the Outsiders. They also enjoy reading Chris Crutcher. He writes great stories and has a unique sense of humor. Will Hobbs is another favorite if you like to see character who have problems find unusual ways of overcoming them. Another series my students really focused on last year was the Cirque du Freak series. I am not overly fond of it, but the guys really seemed to get hooked and couldn't wait to read the next book.

Try Toni Morrison's books: The Bluest Eye, or Beloved. or try any of Torey Hayden's books, One Child, Tiger's Child, Anybody's Kids, Beautiful Child. All good reads! Or try Pride and Predjudice, or The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway. If you really like to read, try any of John Steinbecks books, like The Pearl, or Of Mice and Men, or The Red Pony.

*** Torey Haydens books are all about her experiences in her classroom; she is a teacher for emotionally handicapped children. The Pearl is about a naive couple who are Pacific Indian, and the father finds the pearl of a lifetime. The story chronicles how their lives change because of greed, even though the greed is not their own. Of Mice and Men is about a handicapped young man and his friend who come to work on a ranch, and the problems that the handicapped young man finds himself in through no fault of his own.
