A number of reasons:
1. By virtue of what it takes just to move the extra weight, they have a fair amount of muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat, so their base metabolism is temporarily higher.
2. As you get closer to a healthy weight, your body starts to protect itself from starvation making it harder to actually lose weight. Your metabolism slows down.
I also suspect that at least in the early weeks, a lot of water is lost. If our bodies are 98% water, then it makes sense that bigger people have more water to lose too.

Because they have more to lose. Once they get down to the "skinny" persons weight, they have a harder time too.

'the bigger they are the harder they fall' its true. skinny people have lesss fat to lose and they generally live healthier lives. larger people eat a lot of caories a day and hardly excersise so when they do it works wonders.

just introducing minimal exercise aids in speeding up metabolism. they are initially losing a lot of water and fat plus skinny people are mostly muscle.
