According to this viewing distance calculator (I rounded the numbers):

32 inch 4:3 aspect ratio (regular TV): 3 to 11 feet
32 inch 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen): 3 to 12 feet

40 inch 4:3 aspect ratio (regular TV): 4 to 14 feet
40 inch 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen): 4 to 15 feet

32 inch set = 4 -6 feet
40 inch set = 6-8 feet

For a home theater experience, the recommendation is that the width of the screen produce a 30 deg angle from your eyes. So the answer will depend on whether you have a widescreen (16:9) set or not. The 30 deg recommendation is for widescreen pictures.

32" --> 4ft
40" --> 5ft

the saying is, what ever the tv screen size, times 2.5, the there u go, so a 40 inch tv, you should be back around 100inches

Chances are that you probably have a 27 inch set now, right? If so then you would probably be ok just putting it where that one is now. That worked for me.
