It is most likely a codec issue. One of the funnest issues of the all. Downloading an file analyzer like G-Spot is good, but that sort of tells you what you already know, the files doesn't work the way you like. BitTorrent just caused me a codec headache from hell because of the way it deals with deleted files. So I got what you need. I may be over doing it, but I very rarely find anything I can't play using these packs.
Codecs packs I use:
-DivX and Xvid codec packs available from their main websites.
-XP Codec Pack available from www.xpcodecpack.com
-The codec pack from www.theorica.net
I also installed them in that order(might be important) too.
You get a great program called FFDshow with the last pack that is extremely powerful in the right hands. I love FFDshow it was a labor of love to create for someone and to get it free is awesome.
Hope that helps cause bitTorrent ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've almost completely collected every episode of Top Gear because of bitTorrent... I'm so happy.

There could be several problems. When the film was ripped from it's source format, the person may not have chosen to rip the audio and the video. If they just ripped the video, then there is no audio track to hear. It could also be that you do not have the proper audio codec in your player. To confirm there is an audio track, and that you have the proper codec, get a program called TCPMP. Use it to examine the film you downloaded, it will tell you what the audio codec used was, or if it even has an audio track.
While I do not promote downloading copyrighted content, this is a good way to see what you have actually downloaded.

Either the film might not have audio or you might be missing audio codec in your media player.
If your file extension is .avi then you might be missing DIVX plugin. All depends on the file extension which you haven't mentioned.
You can also try videolan.org to download their player which is pretty good.

U are missing a audio codec.
download a software called avicodec and check the audio codec the file requires.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/avicodec.cfm
Install the codec and enjoy. Be careful some of the codec's can harm your PC.
Enjoy :)

Download GSPOT
It is a video analyser that will tell you what codec it uses and if you have the corrct verion installed.
Sound errors are usually due to the sound being .AC3 or dolby digital.
If that is the case, you need to download ac3 filter and configure it
