On the bottom of the hamburger. That way you can put your ketchup and or mayo on top and all the flavors can mesh well with out the condiments making the lettuce soggy.

I prefer my lettuce on top, but when I worked for a family owned restaurant, they told me to put bun bottom, condiment, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions and then to place the top of the bun on the meat patty and move that to the rest of the sandwich.

If you put it on top it will get mushy in the steam. On the bottom it prevents the bun from getting soggy with meat juice. Use a thin layer of butter or mayo on the bun to help create a moisture-proof seal.

If there is no cheese, right on top of the burger itself.
If there is cheese, right on top of the cheese (which goes on top of the burger).
